More then eleven centuries ago on the high left-hand bank of the Oka river there rose ancient Murom, the homeland of the epic hero Ilya Muromets praised in legends and fairy-tales. Mentioned in the chronicles since the year 862 . Murom is older than Moscow, Vladimir, Suzdal. In the VI-IXth centuries there settled on the Ugro-finish tribes "muroma" who gave the name to the town.

The Murom land is rich in architectural monuments - the Monastery of the Annunciation, the Nunnery of the Trinity and the Monastery of Our Saviour which is nine centuries old are indeed worth seeing.
Murom gave the Orthodox Russia an assembly of Christian spiritual life supporters - Saint Princes Constantine, Michael, Theodore; Saint Peter and Febronia symbolizing love and family happiness; Saint Yuliana Lazarevskaya.

Their relics are carefully preserved in the town temples. Murom gave the world a galaxy of great men - the gun making master Nikita Davydov, Vladimir Zvorykin, television inventor, Rostislav Belyakov, aircraft designer, the Academician of Painting Ivan Kulikov and others.

The Murom museum of history and art is a real preserve of Russian culture treasures. It owns unique collections of Old Russian art, paintings of Russia and western masters, applied art works. Some museum interiors represent the merchant way of life.
Nowadays Murom is a cultural, industrial and historical centre of Russia. International competitions, local fairs of folk art, dancing festivals are held annually. Here one can feel the continuity of time and admire wonderful Russian nature with its thick woods, spacious flowering meadows and fields.
